My daughter has the kind of hair that makes strangers comment on it in the supermarket. Long, thick, with a wave that sits somewhere between straight and curly depending on the day. It's beautiful. It's also a lot to manage, and when she was younger, our nightly haircare routine was honestly one of the most stressful parts of parenting.
Now she's older, and the routine is completely different. Here's what we do, why it works, and the products that are part of it — in case it helps anyone else dealing with long, thick, or generally high-maintenance kids hair.
After bath time
This is the most important hair moment of the day. Hair is damp, which means it's much easier to detangle than when it's dry. We spray Magic Mist through from mid-shaft to ends — not the scalp, which doesn't need conditioning — and then comb through gently with a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends. We don't use heat to dry. Air dry whenever time allows, or a very light diffuse on low heat if we're in a hurry.
Before bed
A loose braid. Always. Long hair on a moving, dreaming, restless child overnight is a recipe for morning knots if you leave it down. The braid doesn't need to be perfect — a simple three-strand plait secured with a gentle hair tie is all you need. In the morning, we take it out and there's a beautiful wave and almost no tangling to deal with.
In the morning
Take out the braid, run fingers through to loosen, spray a little Magic Mist, and brush. The whole thing takes about two minutes. Compared to what our mornings used to look like, this is nothing. It's actually enjoyable now — we chat while I brush, she picks her hairstyle for the day, and then she's off.
What we don't do anymore
We don't wash her hair every day — twice or three times a week is plenty for long hair. We don't use heavy conditioners that leave residue. We don't try to brush dry hair without detangler first. And we absolutely don't start from the roots. Every one of those things made our old routine harder than it needed to be.
It took me a while to find the right rhythm for her hair specifically. Every child's hair is different and what works for my daughter won't be identical to what works for yours. But the basics — damp detangling, overnight braid, gentle products every day — are a good place to start for almost any child with long or thick hair.
If you're still in the thick of chaotic morning hairbrushing sessions, hang in there. It does get easier. And the right products help more than you'd think.
