The Secret to Caring for Kids Curly Hair (That Nobody Tells You)

Curly hair on kids is genuinely beautiful. It's also genuinely a lot of work. If you have a curly-haired child, you already know that a brush and good intentions are not enough. Curly hair tangles differently, dries differently, and responds to products differently than straight or wavy hair.

My daughter's hair is on the curlier end of wavy — not ringlets, but definitely not straight — and it took me a while to figure out what actually works for her versus what works for my son's finer hair. Here's what I've learned.

Moisture is everything

Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair because the natural oils from the scalp have a harder time travelling down the curl pattern. This means curly hair needs more moisture than you think. After washing, apply a leave-in conditioner or a good detangler spray while the hair is still damp and work it through from ends to roots.

Magic Mist works really well for this because it's moisture-rich without being heavy. You can use it generously on curly hair without it going limp or greasy — which is the problem with a lot of kids detanglers.

Detangle when wet, not dry

Dry curly hair is much more prone to breakage. Always detangle curly hair when it's wet or damp, and use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers rather than a brush. Work in sections and be patient. Rushing is how you end up with a crying child and a handful of broken hair.

Less heat, more air

Blow drying curly hair causes frizz and disrupts the curl pattern. Wherever possible, let curly hair air dry. If you're in a hurry, use a diffuser attachment on a low heat setting rather than pointing a regular dryer at it.

Protective styles for overnight

A lot of curly hair tangling happens while kids sleep. A loose braid or a satin scrunchie (not a tight elastic) can make a significant difference to what you're dealing with in the morning. Even a loose pineapple — gathering the hair at the top of the head loosely before bed — helps preserve the curl pattern and reduces overnight knotting.

Don't wash every day

Washing curly hair every day strips the natural oils it desperately needs. Most curly-haired kids do fine with 2-3 washes a week. On non-wash days, a spritz of Magic Mist refreshes the curl and makes any quick detangling easy.

Curly hair isn't harder to care for once you understand it. It just needs a slightly different approach — more moisture, more gentleness, and products that work with the curl instead of against it. Once you find your routine, it actually becomes one of the things you love most about your kid's hair.
