Why I Started Hello Flossi (And What I Was Really Looking For)

People ask me all the time why I started Hello Flossi. The short answer is: I was desperate.

My kids were small, their hair was knotty, and every single morning felt like a battle I was losing before the day had even started. I tried every kids detangler I could find at the supermarket and the pharmacy. Some were too greasy. Some didn't actually do anything. And most of them had ingredients lists that went on for three paragraphs and included things I absolutely did not want to be spraying on my children's heads every day.

I knew there had to be a better way.

A product I couldn't find, so I made it

I'm not a scientist, but I'm a really determined mum. I spent months researching ingredients, talking to formulators, and testing batches on my very patient (and occasionally not so patient) kids. I wanted something that was genuinely naturally derived, lightweight enough that it wouldn't leave hair feeling heavy or greasy, and effective enough that you'd actually feel the difference from the first spray.

The coconut and lime scent came almost by accident — I tried a fragrance blend during formulation and my daughter said it smelled like a holiday. That was it. That was the one.

Made here in New Zealand, on purpose

I could have manufactured overseas and it would have been cheaper. But making our products in New Zealand matters to me. It means I know exactly where they're made, I can visit the facility, I can stand behind every bottle. When I say these ingredients are clean, I mean it — because I've seen the process myself.

There's also something about buying NZ-made that feels right when you're a small brand. Supporting local is something our community does really well and I'm proud to be part of that.

The bit that gets me every time

The messages from parents — that's what gets me. Someone told me recently that her daughter used to dread hairbrushing and now asks to do it herself. Another parent said their son, who has sensory sensitivities, can finally sit through a brush without getting overwhelmed because the spray makes the process so gentle.

That's why I do this. Not for the likes or the sales numbers (though both are nice). It's for those moments.

If you've been looking for a kids hair detangler that actually works and that you can feel good about using, I made Magic Mist for you. I genuinely hope it helps.
