We buy New Zealand-made when we can. Groceries, clothing, gifts. But when it comes to personal care products — shampoos, conditioners, detanglers — most of what's on shelves is imported, often from large manufacturers overseas.
I made a deliberate choice to manufacture Hello Flossi's products in New Zealand, and I want to be honest about why — because it wasn't just about sentiment.
I can actually see what's going in
When you manufacture overseas, you're trusting a lot to people you may never meet in facilities you may never see. For a product I'm asking parents to use on their children's hair every single day, that wasn't something I was comfortable with.
Manufacturing locally means I know the facility. I know the process. I've seen the ingredients arrive and I know how the formula comes together. That level of oversight matters to me — and I think it matters to the parents who buy Hello Flossi too.
Quality control is real, not aspirational
New Zealand has strong regulations around cosmetics manufacturing. Local production means those standards are actually applied, not just claimed. Every batch of Magic Mist is produced under those standards. When I say it's quality I'm proud of, it's because I've been close enough to the process to know.
Supporting local feels right in a business like this
Hello Flossi is a small NZ brand. Our customers are NZ families. It feels right that the product they're using is made here too — that the money they spend is supporting jobs and suppliers in our own country. That's not a marketing angle. It's just something I care about.
The carbon footprint argument
Shipping products halfway around the world has a real environmental cost. Local manufacturing isn't a complete solution — ingredients still come from various places — but it reduces one significant leg of that journey. It's a smaller footprint, and when you're building a brand from scratch, that matters.
I'd be lying if I said manufacturing locally is always easy or cheap. It isn't. But I think the tradeoffs are worth it, and I think families who choose Hello Flossi deserve to know exactly what they're getting and where it comes from. That's what NZ made means to us.
